Copy Of -HBNSW COMMITTEE MEMBER PROFILE - KIRSTY DAY

August 05, 2018

By Linda Markesinis

I met Kirsty, 11 years ago, when I moved into the property next door to her at Goulburn.   As time went by I learned that she is an amazing woman.  Kirsty’s love for horses  stems back to the age of 8.  Starting with pony club every weekend and then eventually leading to State competition in jumping.

As Kirsty grew, the love for horses and the science behind these magnificent creatures grew. She acquired an ASSOC Diploma in applied science (horse husbandry and management) then a B.APP Science (equine).  With her skills she acquired experience by working around stud farms such as New Haven in the Hunter Valley and Kyle Ranch in Texas USA.  Mostly undertaking stud and yearling work.   While in Texas, Kirsty was taught to Artificially Inseminate broodmares.  This opened another door to acquiring an additional knowledge. When she returned from the USA, Kirsty decided to study for her Certificate.

BRIDDON PARK THOROUGHBREDS ARE NOW WORKING WITH STANDARDBREDS

April 13, 2018

By Linda Markesinis

It came to the time to find a preparer for our two Auckland Reactor colts.  I was told that Wayne and Ingrid Slattery from Briddon Park did Sales Preparing.  I rang Ingrid to see if they would take the job of preparing my standardbreds.  They agreed but explained they had never prepped standardbreds.

J. L. RAITH

January 11, 2018

J L RAITH MEMORIAL – Harness Breeders NSW will always remain a perpetual memorial to Jack Raith in addition to this race named in his honour for 3YO Fillies.

Jacob Lauder (Jack) Raith (1895 - 1968) formed the NSW Trotting Horse Breeders’ Association (today known as Harness Breeders NSW) in 1951 and he was its founding President.  Their early platform included positive identification, fertility tests and limitation of services.

LANCE COBBAN and his passion for harness racing

December 21, 2017

A book on his 21st birthday was the catalyst for Lance Cobban to develop a passion for Harness Racing.  The book was called 250 Famous Trotters and from this point Lance followed breeding for 30 years.  Lance ventured into harness racing about four years ago purchasing fillies and mares.  Some of those purchases based on the impression the mighty CHRISTIAN CULLEN made on him.  Lance’s tale started when he was just a small boy…….

A little horse called “ELROY” that was all “ABOUT THE ATTITUDE”

December 14, 2017

Sometimes there is a story behind a racehorse that just has to be told and a little horse called ABOUT THE ATTITUDE has a story that Melissa Hawke has shared with us!

GIRL WITH ATTITUDE, a top race mare that won in excess of $120,000, had gone on to become a broodmare.  During her breeding years she produced five foals, and of those three have been winners.  Sadly her broodmare career was cut short when she was bitten by a snake and died. It is her last foal ABOUT THE ATTITUDE or as the Hawke’s lovingly call him “ELROY” that we begin our tale.

NICOLE & DARREN ELDER

December 07, 2017

One mare is all it took for the Hunter based couple, Darren and Nicole Elder to establish themselves with a breeding line that has given them much success over the past 25 years. NICKALONG SOUNDS a $300 purchase back in the early 1990’s is where it all began. A consistent performer herself winning 15 races in the mid to late 1990’s, the mare then went on to be a wonderful broodmare to the family. Of the seven foals she produced six have been winners. Four of those winning in excess of $50,000.

DEAN AND RIKKI CERNOVSKIS

November 30, 2017

When DROP THE HAMMER lined up for the Kevin & Kay Seymour Evolution Series heat at Newcastle last night Dean and Rikki Cernovskis were hoping the handsome 3YO would break through for his first win. The gelding had already run four places from five starts with one of those placing’s at Group 3 level. DROP THE HAMMER finished a gallant 2nd and now progresses to the $20,000 Final at Club Menangle on the 9th of December. The thrill and satisfaction of seeing a horse they bred continue to perform well certainly drives the couple to continue on their breeding path.
